Who qualifies for a window tint medical exemption in Illinois, what paperwork you need, and how to get darker tint legally.

Illinois limits how dark you can tint the windows next to the driver. But there's a medical exemption for people who need to be shielded from the sun. Here's how it works.

Who qualifies

Under 625 ILCS 5/12-503, the exemption covers people with a medical condition that requires shielding from direct sunlight. The law names conditions like systemic or discoid lupus, albinism, disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis and light sensitivity from a traumatic brain injury. It also covers a vehicle used to transport someone with one of these conditions who lives at the same address as the owner. Conditions where sunglasses would be enough don't qualify.

What you need

  • A certified statement or letter from a physician licensed in Illinois
  • The letter kept in the vehicle at all times
  • A copy filed with the Illinois Secretary of State, which issues a window tint plate or sticker
  • The physician certification renewed every four years

What the shop needs

Illinois requires the installer to get a copy of the physician letter before installing darker film, and keep it on file. Bring a copy when you come in and we'll take care of the rest.
